FOXBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — All eyes are on Foxboro after the New England Patriots parted ways with rookie head coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo's firing came after the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills in their season finale on Sunday. They finished the season with a 4-13 record. In a statement, Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said it was one of the hardest decisions he's had to make. He added that he's known Mayo for 17 years, but the team's performance did not go as he hoped. MORE: Patriots fire head coach Jerod Mayo During a news conference Monday afternoon, Kraft said, "This situation is all on me. I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation." Kraft said Mayo has all of the tools as a head coach to be successful in the league, he just needed more time before taking the job. "I don't like losing. I don't like losing the way we lost. Things were just not developing the way we would have liked and it was time to move on," Kraft said. When asked when the decision to get rid of Mayo was made, he said, "Over the last month, I went back and forth." Mayo is now the first Patriots head coach since Rod Rust in 1990 to be fired after one season. "In my life and my business, I make certain decisions I know when it's right and it just happened. It was very hard because of the personal relationship I feel for Jerod and the human being he is and I felt guilty I put him in that position, but we are moving on," Kraft said. Mayo had previously been the Patriots' inside linebackers coach since 2019 and also spent his entire eight-year playing career in New England. Mayo was drafted by the team in the first round in 2008 and named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year after that season. Kraft said they will be looking to hire someone who can help the team get back to the playoffs. However, Elliot Wolf and the front office staff will remain in place. After Sunday's win, the Patriots will likely have the fourth pick in the 2025 NFL Draft instead of the first overall pick.
