Restoring power and clearing roadways in the city

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Snow plows are paving the way for other drivers to reach their destinations safely. Linemen are working to restore power before the temperature drops again.
Rob Allen with LFUCG’s Division of Streets and Roads explains the most difficult part of their jobs.
“Subfreezing temperatures,” Allen said. “It’s really hard on the equipment and people outside.”
As for the linemen, Daniel Lowry with Kentucky Utilities say they’ve been working long shifts through the night and into the day to restore power to their customers. He says Lexington was hit the hardest with power outages.
The majority of KU customers should have their electricity back by 11 tonight.
A big problem both utility workers and drivers are facing is the heavy ice weighing down tree limbs and power lines.
“We had 75 calls for trees during the day then another 22 trees in the overnight,” Allen said.
It’s a lot of work they haven’t had to do alone.
“We’ve had a lot of volunteers filling in from other divisions, we had drivers from waste management help run routes yesterday,” Allen said.
While these workers are on the road, officials are asking other drivers to give them extra space and slow down when you’re driving past them. Even pedestrians can pose a problem.
“We’re having a lot of problems with folks walking on the roads, I know sidewalks aren’t clear, but it is super dangerous,” Allen said.
As for the linemen, they’re asking people to stay away from downed power lines until they’re fixed. Kentucky Utilities says they’ve received around 750 calls for downed wires across their grids.
Overall, it’s patience that both these drivers and linemen are asking for.
“We will work as long as we’re effective, we do not treat every street, but we will execute the plan and take care of any problem areas,” Allen said.
