ONONDAGA COUNTY – Less than 48 hours into the new year the East Syracuse Minoa girls volleyball team found itself sporting a five-match win streak, quite a recovery from a 1-2 start.
What started back on Dec. 16 with a hard-fought five-set victory over Christian Brothers Academy continued last Thursday with another five-set conquest, this time over Tully.
Long an established power, the Black Knights quickly recovered from the Spartans taking the opening set 25-21 by tearing through the second set 25-14 to pull even.
A close third set saw ESM pull it out 25-22, to get back in front. Tully again built a sizable lead in the fourth set only to have the Spartans rally and get within two points of taking the match.
And even though it lost that fourth set 29-27, ESM carried its confidence over into the final set by jumping out to an 8-0 advantage, more than enough to eventually prevail 15-9.
Earning a season-best 47 assists, Kristina Levkovich passed it to a front line where Katelyn Davis banged out 21 kills, Erin Murnane earned 13 kills and Morgan Palmer had 10 kills. Palmer also managed 44 digs on the defensive side as Murnane added 22 digs, Levkovich 19 digs and Davis 12 digs.
More defense came from Madyson Broome, who filled in for Leah Rehm and managed 35 digs. Avery Wood and Alaina Berry had eight digs apiece and Victoria Marano got seven digs.
CBA was scheduled to return to action last Friday against Utica Proctor, but snow forced a postponement.
Manlius Pebble Hill has matches early this week against Faith Heritage and Chittenango before facing CBA on Thursday night.
Back on Dec. 19 in the Trojans’ 25-21, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of DeRuyter Laura Kinane led the Trojans, serving up six aces and getting 24 assists. Caroline Bernazzani paced the front line with 12 kills as Nora McGee added four kills. India Clary-Sohriakoff (18 digs) and Annie Ward) paced the MPH defense.
