Messy Monday morning, watching for wintry weather at week’s end
Jan 05, 2025
A wintry and wet Sunday is unfolding across the Carolinas to close out the first weekend of 2025, and Mother Nature may bring more flakes to our area soon. While pockets of freezing rain and sleet are possible north of I-40 overnight into Monday morning, most communities outside of the mountains will only see rain as a line of gusty showers pushes through the WCCB Charlotte viewing area around sunrise. A Winter Storm Warning continues for the High Country as a wet wintry mix continues through Monday morning, eventually transitioning to all snow as northwesterly flow could pile up another few inches of flakes.
The rain clears out by noon across the Piedmont and Foothills, but the forecast remains difficult as a stubborn pocket of cold air sets up around the Metro and westward. While areas along I-40 will struggle to clear the 40s, areas south and east of I-85 could easily cruise into the lower 60s. The Queen City should end up somewhere in the middle in the lower 50s for the first day of the workweek. Clear skies return by Monday evening, but highs will struggle to clear the 30s and lower 40s across the board between Tuesday and Friday despite abundant sunshine as winds from the northwest pour in.
The cold air will set the stage for what could be Charlotte’s first measurable snowfall in nearly three years. An area of low pressure will develop in the northern Gulf, sweeping northeastward into the Carolinas by Friday night. Models are suggesting snow and sleet will ride along the I-85 corridor Friday evening, continuing through Saturday morning. Stay tuned as minor changes in the storm’s track could have major implications for the forecast.
