The Lake County Retired Teachers Association announced it will be holding its luncheon at a new location, starting with the Fab. 11 meeting. The buffet-style luncheon will be held at Mama Roberto’s at 8658 Mentor Ave. in Mentor. Social time begins at 11 a.m., followed by the program at 11:30. After the program, lunch will be served. The lunch will include chicken marsala, demi glaze with fresh mushrooms, penne Florentine pasta marinara with spinach and fresh mushrooms, green beans, tossed salad, rolls and butter with a cookie tray for dessert, according to a news release. Coffee, tea and soft drinks are included. The program for the luncheon meeting is “Stagecoach Mary,” with a live dramatic performance by Robin Echols Cooper. Members will hear how this rough gunfighter from the Wild West, who was born into slavery, stood out on the trail and became the first African-American woman to carry mail, the release stated. Cooper is an actress and member of the Women in History Ohio organization since 2000. She grew up in Chardon, received her bachelor’s degree in communications with minors in art and theater from The Ohio State University and has been telling stories professionally since 1992, the release stated. Reservations for the luncheon must be made by Jan. 31. A check payable to “LCRTA” for $19 per person is to be mailed to Karen Sawitke at 9399 Ridgeside Drive, Mentor, OH, 44060. LCRTA will collect items for End 68 Hours of Hunger, a public non-profit organization that confronts the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school Friday and the free breakfast they receive in school Monday. Members are asked to bring peanut butter, squeezable jellies and canned pasta such as Beefaroni, etc., the release stated. Other items that would also be appreciated include Saltines/graham crackers, granola/nutrition bars, macaroni and cheese, canned chicken/tuna, instant Individual oatmeal packets, instant flavored, potatoes/rice/noodles, fruit/pudding cup-four pack. The collection of pull tabs from aluminum beverage cans continues, as LCRTA will deliver the pull tabs to McDonald House, according to the release. All retired teachers under STRS of Ohio, or an out-of-state retirement system, are invited to attend the luncheon and are eligible for membership.
