CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - The Chatham County community had a chance to meet their new sheriff on Saturday as Sheriff Richard Coleman toured neighborhoods, reconnecting with old friends and neighbors.
“It’s hard to describe how I’m feeling right now—it’s just awesome,” Coleman said.
Coleman called the event "Chatham Roll," a tour where he and his deputies visited neighborhoods, stopping for hugs, handshakes, and even to shoot some hoops.
“Just to see the level of love, those that has come out to show me the love that I've given to this community over so many years, and that they’ve given to me, and to have that reconnecting now—it’s just amazing,” Coleman said.

Community members said the tour showed the sheriff’s commitment to fostering a relationship between law enforcement and the people they serve.
“It’s very special to see law enforcement in the community, especially the sheriff’s department,” said Rodheem Greene, a friend of Coleman’s. “I can see with the kind of leader he’s been all my life of knowing him, I know that it’s gonna brush off on the community, it’s gonna brush off on the deputies. It’s amazing.”
Coleman said these relationships are key to reducing crime and improving public safety.
“We’re reaching out in many other ways to put a hole in the community and bring law enforcement back to the community and bring the community back to law enforcement,” he said.
Janell Westley-Edwards, one of Coleman’s former teachers, said she is proud to have been part of his journey.
“I am so proud to have met him in his formative years and to be here to see him blossom into this amazing individual,” she said.
