RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Liberty Flames struggled on offense, leading to a 26-7 loss to Buffalo in the Bahamas Bowl on Saturday at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium.
With the loss, Liberty ended the season with an 8-4 record. This was their sixth-straight bowl game appearance, continuing their streak of playing in bowl games since becoming eligible in 2019.
Liberty’s offense had its worst performance of the season, managing just 242 total yards, far below their season average of 434.5 yards per game. The Flames ran for 162 yards, with most of it coming on two big plays—a 57-yard run by quarterback Ryan Burger and a 55-yard run by running back Billy Lucas.
Burger, a transfer from Appalachian State, made his first start for Liberty but struggled, completing only 4-of-12 passes for 40 yards. Nate Hampton took over in the fourth quarter and also struggled, completing 2-of-9 passes for the same 40 yards. However, Hampton connected with Reese Smith on a 36-yard touchdown pass late in the game to help Liberty avoid their first shutout since 2019.
Defensively, Liberty kept the game close in the first half, holding Buffalo to three field goals. Linebacker Teylor Jackson led the Flames with a career-high 11 tackles.
Buffalo's victory showcased their strong season and extended their bowl success streak, while Liberty will look to bounce back next year.
