Like any late-night show with a high standard, a big number coming out of the break is a must. Jan. 4 as it welcomed Mayfield for a GCHSHL Blue North clash, Chagrin Falls ensured that part of its act was in rare form. Anton Flach and Ace Rossi each scored twice in a four-goal second period for the Tigers, en route to a 6-1 victory. Chagrin (11-3) moved the puck with crisp efficiency and blew open what had been a 1-1 game after one. “The first period was good,” Chagrin coach Craig Hoberman said. “The second period, we really came out. I think we played much better as a full unit. We have games where we struggle and we try to do things by ourselves and we have limited success. When we play as a unit and everybody is moving the puck around and passing and using each other, it results in goals.” The Tigers enjoyed a 38-18 shots advantage, including a potent 15-shot second that featured a three-goal outburst in a 4-minute, 50-second span early in the period. First it was Rossi banging home a rebound from the left side at 1:58. Then Flach struck with a wrister at 4:26 and pounced at the left bar at 6:48. Rossi completed the second-period barrage with a power-play tally at 11:57, his 22nd goal of the season. “I feel like what pleased me the most from the three periods was how we were moving the puck around in the zone,” Rossi said. “We were passing it around. We were giving the new kids opportunities to play, which is nice for them.” Chagrin 1-0Josh Baraona at 3:12 pic.twitter.com/CCc1OpfxUj — Chris Lillstrung (@CLillstrungNH) January 5, 2025 Josh Baraona slotted a look from the left circle to kick-start the Tigers’ cause at 3:12 of the first. Casey Sega leveled matters at 12:46, with a chipper off the boards to generate an odd-man and cashing in on a rebound, his 22nd goal of the winter. With the versatility in the squad as the prolific Cimperman and Baraona rotate onto the blue line from forward to pair with Flach, scoring punch accentuated by Rossi’s arrival and having an experienced goaltender in Nathaniel Newton, Chagrin is hopeful that, at its best, it could be a Baron Cup III factor next month on the hallowed ice at Brooklyn. “One-hundred precent,” Rossi said. “I feel like, if we just play our best hockey, pass the puck around and get good shots on net and play solid defense, I feel like we can win Baron Cup.”
