Comedian Jim Jefferies has been around the world, but he’ll never forget one specific visit to Cleveland. The Australian funnyman, who returns to Northeast Ohio for a show on Jan. 10 at Playhouse Square’s KeyBank State Theatre, will think twice about opening the door to his next Northeast Ohio hotel room. “One time arriving in Cleveland, I came in about midnight,” said Jefferies, calling from his Los Angeles home. “They gave me my key. I went into a room, and a naked man jumped up out of the bed. They obviously gave me a key to the wrong room. I don’t want to (expletive) on the Cleveland staff, but they could’ve done better in that situation.” That awkward encounter turned into a perfect bit for Jefferies, who is known to talk about everything from alcoholism, political satire and celebrities to gun control, religion, sex and relationships. “I did go down to reception and say, ‘Hey, a naked man just jumped up and started screaming at me,’” he said. “The girl was like, ‘My bad.’ Yeah, you’re bad. I always hate when Americans say ‘My bad’ to gloss over something horrible they just did. I could’ve got the hell beaten out of me. ‘My bad.’” You may now Jefferies from television. Not only did his critically acclaimed show “Legit” air for two seasons on FX, but he also had “The Jim Jefferies Show” on Comedy Central. The comedian is working on the follow-up special to 2023’s “High & Dry,” which is on Netflix. “At the moment, I’m doing what I always do, telling a few observational things about society and talking about a few hot-button issues,” he said. “And then for the rest of the time, I’m talking about dumb (expletive) I still get up to.” There’s no bigger hot-button issue than politics at the moment, with the comedian noting he’ll be talking about the election. “I’m going to be pretty even-handed on that,” he said. “It’s only going to be about five minutes (of) the show. “We all know that it’s called the United States of America, but we don’t feel very united at the moment, so I like to give us all a nice hour and a half where we could just have a good laugh.” While Jefferies became a naturalized citizen five years ago, he still views America through an Australian’s eyes, which, the comic said, helps to infuse his comedy with a unique perspective. “A fish out of water is always funny,” he said. “Someone who can see your society from a different lens is always good because if you’ve grown up with something and you’ve never seen any other way, it doesn’t seem weird, it doesn’t seem funny to you. “(Comic) Shane Gillis on his last special ripped into Australia a lot; I actually watched it and was laughing. Those were jokes that I never would’ve told about Australia, so it takes an outsider’s point of view to be able to look at something (from) a different point of view.” Considering his hotel history in Cleveland, will the funnyman be a little nervous on this trip when he opens the door to his hotel room for the first time? “Well, I’m arriving at a reasonable hour this time,” he said, “so I won’t be waking anyone up.” And if by chance history repeats itself, Jefferies knows what to say to the naked occupant. “That’s right,” he laughed. “‘My bad.’ What are you going to do?” Jim Jefferies When: 7 p.m. Jan. 10. Where: Playhouse Square’s KeyBank State Theatre, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Tickets: $43 to $203. Info: 216-241-6000 or PlayhouseSquare.org.
