RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Most of the area is under a winter storm warning as we will start to see impacts from a winter storm by tonight. The cold air also isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Today we start off with fair skies, but sun will quickly fade behind clouds. High temperatures will top out near 40 and it will be breezy from time to time. Now, the big story on everyone’s mind is the winter storm. We may start to see precipitation on VIPIR Radar, but due to dry air at the surface it will likely evaporate before reaching the ground. After 7PM is when I am expecting snow flurries to really start across the area. Snow will become steadier and more widespread as we go into the overnight hours. The only major different with the forecast from yesterday is that the transition from snow to a wintry mix looks to happen later which means our snowfall accumulations may be a bit higher. A nose of warm air will allow snow to transition to rain for areas south of route 40 after midnight. This surge of warm air will very slowly track north which doesn’t look to make it to the metro area until after 5AM Monday morning. Once this warm pushes north this allow our precipitation to transition to sleet and then freezing rain. air aloft which will allow snow to mix over to sleet and then freezing rain. Areas north of Fredericksburg look to not transition at all and stay with snow for the duration of the event indicated by higher accumulations. By noon on Monday most of the moisture will be out of central Virginia as the storms pulls away from the coast. However, Monday afternoon and evening we could have a few more spotty snow showers as the backside of the system moves through. Colder air will slide down and lock into place all week with highs staying in the 30s. Although cold, we stay quiet for the week, but our weather models are hinting out storm #2 moving in next weekend.
