CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Officials at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Naval Base San Diego issued base access advisories Friday, announcing heightened security measures at all entry gates, according to posts made on social media. Naval Base San Diego The Naval Base was the first to notify the public of changes, noting on Facebook that the Trusted Traveler Program has been suspended until further notice. As a result, gate guards will now be conducting 100% hands-on ID card checks. What exactly does this mean? According to Naval Base officials, all individuals attempting to access any gates must present an "authorized credential" to guards for verification. Plus, if a person with authorized access wants to escort another individual on base, that person must also provide a valid U.S. federal or state ID and must be in the same vehicle as the person escorting them. "Please note, foreign nationals are not permitted to be escorted onto the installation unless they have undergone the necessary vetting process at the Naval Base San Diego visitor control center," Naval Base officials noted. San Diego FBI’s ‘Most Wanted’ in 2025 Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Later on, officials with Camp Pendleton made a similar announcement while posting on X, formally known as Twitter. The base advisory noted, "Commander NORTHCOM has directed all military installations to implement heightened security measures at all entry gates to include 100% ID checks, random inspections, and the suspension of the Trusted Traveler Program until further notice." For those unfamiliar, NORTHCOM, or U.S. Northern Command, plans, organizes and executes homeland defense and civil support efforts, also coordinating defense support of civil authorities.  Officials with the military base said all visitors must report to the Camp Pendleton Visitor Center, located at building 20255T adjacent to the main gate near Interstate 5, to request access. This weekend, however, the Visitor Center is closed. During this timeframe, officials said guards "may grant escort status to individuals who meet the requirements for Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) access. This refers to the ability to enter a military base by using an identification system that scans fingerprints. As listed on their base access requirements page, acceptable base credentials include Common Access Cards, Uniformed Services ID (family/retiree), Federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) enabled for Camp Pendleton access, or Camp Pendleton enabled DBIDS visitor passes or credentials. Military base officials also said drivers should expect delays and random inspections at all entry gates as the security posture of Camp Pendleton is enhanced. FOX 5/KUSI reached out to Camp Pendleton for comment on the decision to heighten gate security. Lt. Jorin Hollenbeak with Marine Corps Communication Strategy and Operations made the following statement: "Commander NORTHCOM has directed all military installations to implement heightened security measures at all entry gates to include 100% ID checks, random inspections, and the suspension of the Trusted Traveler program until further notice. This direction is not Camp Pendleton specific and applies to all military installations in the United States." SDSU student among those injured in deadly New Orleans attack When asked if the tightened security measures were related to the recent events in Louisiana, specifically the suspected terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Lt. Hollenbeak said, "The updated installation access protocols are a NORTHCOM directive. We cannot speak on their behalf." It's unknown at this time, how long these directives will remain in place. Meanwhile, FOX 5/KUSI also reached out to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to inquire about similar gate security advisories and is still waiting for a response.
