GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - The Brown County Seed Library continues to make strides in providing free seeds to residents, helping to foster a community-driven, sustainable food culture in Green Bay.
Open to all residents of Brown County, the Seed Library offers a curated collection of edible seeds, along with native plant varieties aimed at supporting local pollinators.

Seeds are available for pick-up at the Central Library during the facility hours.
This project relies on volunteers who gather regularly to sort and pack thousands of seed envelopes for distribution.
“We're doing two sessions, a morning and then an afternoon one. Each of them is about two and a half hours. Most days like that get four to five thousand envelopes,” said Melissa Wass, a meeting convenor for the Seed Library. “The community response has been wonderful, with people coming in to help with packing, donating seeds, and taking them home to plant."
Seeds such as peas, zucchini, cilantro, and onions are some of the staples packed during these sessions, each being crops that are well-suited for the region’s growing conditions.
The library is committed to making seeds that thrive in northeastern Wisconsin’s soil and climate, a goal that aligns with broader environmental concerns.
“The more we learn about climate change, the more we understand that locally grown seeds do better locally, especially with our unique soil and climate,” Wass emphasized.
The Seed Library’s long-term goal is to grow a fully locally sourced collection.

“So far this year, about 30% of the seeds are locally grown, which is great for just our second year,” Wass said.
As the project continues to grow, the Seed Library plans to expand its offerings and community involvement, ensuring a plentiful future for Brown County residents.
