Winter Storm Warning issued for central Indiana on Sunday
Jan 04, 2025
We are starting off the weekend with bitter, but bright weather throughout central Indiana. Morning lows fell to the single digits north of Indy with wind chills dropping below zero near sunrise! The weather is going to remain quiet today with plenty of sunshine. There will be a few more clouds in the sky by the afternoon with highs in the mid to upper 20s.
Changes are on the way heading into Sunday as a winter storm looms for the second half of the weekend. Ahead of the system, skies will become cloudy, and lows will once again fall into the teens by early Sunday morning.
The weather becomes very active across Indiana by tomorrow! The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings and a Winter Weather Advisory for central Indiana on Sunday.
Winter Storm Warning begins at 7 AM Sunday for Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, and Greene counties.
Winter Storm Warning begins at 10 AM for counties closer to Indianapolis and will expire at 1 PM Monday.
A Winter Weather Advisory for Tippecanoe, Madison, Delaware, Tipton and Howard counties will start at 1 PM Sunday and will last until 1 PM Monday.
Snow showers will begin to move into our southwestern counties around 7 AM Sunday with the coverage filling into the area mid to late Sunday morning. The coverage expands across the central Indiana after 2 PM with steady snowfall continuing through the afternoon and evening. This will have an impact on travel conditions after the Colts game Sunday afternoon.
Snow will continue Sunday evening and heading into the overnight, which is when the highest snowfall rates will likely occur. In that time frame, there is a zone across southern Indiana that may begin to see a transition from snow to sleet/icy mix.
Be prepared for snowfall early Monday morning and hazardous travel conditions across the viewing area. Not only will we be dealing with snow, but also strong winds with gusts up to 35 MPH. Snow showers will begin to taper off midday Monday with highs in the mid-20s.
Heavy snowfall amounts are anticipated with this winter storm, especially across the southern half of the state. Right now, it is looking like snow totals may range between 6” to 10” along and south of I-70, with isolated higher amounts from the Bloomington to Columbus line. Any ice/sleet that mixes in with snow our southern counties will drop snow amounts but still result in difficult travel conditions.
The snow totals north of Indianapolis are tricky to determine because forecast models are hinting at a sharp cut-off with snow totals within the zone under a Winter Weather Advisory. For now, we kept 3” to 6” north of Indianapolis with lesser totals the farther north you go. Be sure to stay tuned for updates within the next 24 to 48 hours from the Weather Authority!
