How to prepare for this weekend's storm
Jan 03, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - With a winter storm on its way, expected to bring ice and snow over the weekend, people are bracing for slick roads and dangerous conditions.
Hardware Stores
Hardware stores have a lot of supplies for a storm like what's coming, including ice melts and snow blowers. Those are the two items they're seeing a lot of people run in and buy today.
A store manager at Lowe's says with the expected ice and snow, it's best to get ice melt on the ground right when the ice hardens.
Having less ice helps make the snow less compact, making shoveling and plowing easier. The store manager said it's important to prepare the night before for what's coming.
"If you wait until it starts to snow, today's gonna be busy for us and probably early tomorrow, but don't wait until the last minute because if you do, you're gonna be battling the elements," said Lance Courson, store manager at Lowe's.
Courson said it's important to bundle up and stay warm, and make sure you have a heater, and an ice scraper for cars.
There are options for battery operated or gas snow blowers. As for those ice melts, he says they've been selling fast as people get ready for the storm.
Clearing Roads
The Kansas Department of Transportation, which is mainly responsible for clearing highways, says the focus here is on snow plows as opposed to treating the roads with a salt and sand mixture.
Rain is expected to occur before ice, so if roads are treated, that treatment could quickly wash away.
While KDOT is working on clearing the roads, there are some things you can do to stay safe."Stay 100 feet away from snow plows, that's usually a good distance, at least 100 feet," said JB Wilson, KDOT Public Information Officer. "Drive for conditions, make sure your phone's down, make sure that you're watching the road."
He says KDOT crews are planning to start plowing Saturday afternoon. That's a few hours after KSN Storm Track 3 meteorologists say conditions will start to deteriorate.
Some rural communities might get treated instead of just being plowed, since there aren't as many cars on the road to pack down snow and make it easier to plow.
Safety Advice
At KHP, prep is a bit different. Some troopers cut their shifts short Friday, getting ready to jump in to help over the weekend.
For troopers, snow and ice storms are something they deal with every year. They have a few recommendations if you absolutely must travel. They say it's a good idea to keep some extra items in your car.
"When it gets cold out you're gonna want to have a jacket, a blanket, something inside the vehicle so those moments you might be out of the vehicle unexpectedly, you've got it to put on," said Trooper Ben Gardner with KHP.
He says he's also bringing his reflective jacket with him. It's a good idea to keep reflective clothing in your car in case you have to get out near a busy road to make a repair.
He also says it's important to have a first aid kit, in case of any injuries.
The most important thing to remember is to cut down on travel over the weekend. Do all your shopping and prep Friday. KHP troopers say you should be prepared to stay home if at all possible.
