Mud Island stage could be grooving again in April with popup concerts

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Music may return to the long-silent Mud Island Amphitheater in mid-April, at least temporarily.
That's when the Downtown Neighborhood Association plans a three-day popup concert event at the site with some of Memphis' best bands, to show the community what could be happening in the future.
The idea comes from past popup events at Crosstown Concourse and the Tennessee Brewery, which helped jump start redevelopment there.
Pop-up concerts planned at Mud Island Amphitheater
Mud Island Amphitheater last hosted a concert in 2018.
Jerred Price with Downtown Neighborhood Association said it's important to bring that energy back now, as downtown Memphis loses concerts and tourists to Mississippi.
"We are a music city, Memphis. Music City, U.S.A. It's our culture, it's in our blood, and we're missing that element of that size show and that size venue in downtown," Price said. "And we're losing those tax dollars, were losing that tourism, we're losing that business across state lines to Mississippi right now, to that amphitheater down there."
Can Mud Island Park be brought back to life?
Volunteers will add fresh coat of paint on seating, and do some pressure washing ahead of the event, Price said.
"What we're really pushing for is a bigger and brand-new amphitheater, which is what the community, when we polled them, said they wanted," Price said.
Price told city council recently that the cost of the event would be covered by the downtown association, not by the city, and the DNA would handle liability insurance for the events.
He is meeting with the mayor next week on funding for the larger project, and said the mayor and city council have been on board, so far.
