CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina has been ranked third among the most popular moving destinations in the United States, according to a new study.
United Van Lines, which provides long-distance service for residential, corporate, and military relocations, released its annual National Movers Study on Wednesday, which shows that South Carolina had 62% inbound moves last year.
The study revealed that roughly 27% of people were moving to the Palmetto State to retire, while 18% were seeking a lifestyle change. It also shows that 8% moved to South Carolina for an improved cost of living.
Myrtle Beach (80%) and Greenville-Spartanburg (64%) were top destinations.
“United Van Lines continues to see greater migration to less densely populated areas of the country – often moving outside of big cities and to be closer to families,” the company said of its study. “Of those Southeast states, Wilmington, North Carolina, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Little Rock, Arkansas were included among the metro areas for high inbound migration.”
A majority of new residents were in the 55-62 age group, followed closely by 65 and older. The lowest age group migrating to South Carolina were those 34 and under. Meanwhile, most of the people moving out of the state were aged 65 and older, and the lowest were those 35 to 44.
North Carolina saw 60% inbound migration, and South Carolina’s number of outbound moves was at 38.26%.
The top state for moving was West Virginia while the top outbound state was New Jersey. North Carolina ranked number five on the list. South Carolina has been included in the top inbound states over the past five years.
