Retired VSP K9 dies unexpectedly at home with former handler

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A retired Virginia State Police (VSP) K-9, to whom the agency credits several high-risk fugitive arrests, died unexpectedly on New Year's Day.
Storm, whose name was chosen via community poll while he was in training camp in 2017, was a German Shepherd who came to VSP at 3 years old, according to the agency. He worked with state police for 4 years.

During his time with VSP, he apprehended several high-risk fugitives, according to the agency. He did so while assisting tactical teams across the state, as well as the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Following his retirement in 2021, he was officially adopted by his handler, Sgt. Kenneth Taylor.
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, Storm died at the age of 12, surrounded by his family.
According to VSP, his death was unexpected, as he had no known underlying issues.
