Johnson for Johnson: Dusty supporting Mike for speaker
Jan 02, 2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO/AP) — A new Congress will start in Washington on Friday, and with it comes a question: can Republican Mike Johnson of Louisiana stay on as speaker? South Dakota's Dusty Johnson leaves no doubt about who has his support.
"Clearly, I'm going to support Speaker Johnson for the same reasons that Donald Trump came out and supported him," the Republican from Mitchell, S.D. said. "We're in a difficult environment. It is a deeply divided country and a deeply divided House, but Mike Johnson knows how to navigate these waters."
That vote for House speaker is set for Friday. Meanwhile, it's a new era in Washington; the presidency and Senate will both flip from blue to red while the House stays Republican.
"Clearly, if we don't secure the border, roll back regulations and push back against the influence of the Chinese Communist Party, shame on us," Dusty Johnson said. "I mean, what in the world do we think people voted for in November if not for that kind of focused action to actually get things done."

President-elect Donald Trump will once again take the oath of office on Jan. 20, and Johnson doesn't hesitate to praise the returning commander-in-chief.
"Anytime you talk to President Trump, it's kind of exciting," Dusty Johnson said. "He's a force of nature. He has strongly held opinions, and yet he's far more collaborative than most people realize."
Johnson is also sharing his reaction to an ongoing story which has grabbed the country's attention: a deadly truck attack in New Orleans that left 14 people dead.
"We need to get a handle on, in this country, on what motivates hatred," he said. "We can have sharp disagreements, but hatred does not make our country stronger."
Come Friday, Johnson will have begun his tenure as South Dakota's only member of the U.S. House exactly six years ago.
