Jan 02, 2025
The last stretch of 2024 in New Haven included a homicide, a stolen Amazon van, and two stabbings, including one at Union Station. The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) announced those crimes on the social media platform X over the past week-plus. • First, on Dec. 24, city police responded to the area of Edgewood Avenue and Beers Street at around 8:08 p.m., after receiving 911 calls about a gunshot victim. Police found 43-year-old New Havener Heriberto Cotto unresponsive with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was then pronounced dead. Officers located both ballistic evidence in the street and Cotto’s car. Detectives have determined that Cotto arrived in the area just before the incident and was in an argument with another person before he was shot and killed. Police have not yet made an arrest. The department asks that anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information relevant to the investigation call detectives at (203) 946‑6304 or through the anonymous tip-line at (866) 888-TIPS (8477).• Days later, on Dec. 27, police arrested three men — one for gun charges, the others for outstanding warrants. Officers located those three men after responding to the area of Chapel and Kensington streets at around 9:24 p.m., after an anonymous tip reported that a man in a red Infiniti vehicle had pulled out a handgun. Officers located the Infiniti and detained the three men. One attempted to run but was caught by police; “a handgun was located inside a fanny pack which was in his possession,” the police press release stated. As a convicted felon, the arrestee is prohibited from possessing a gun or ammunition. He was charged with weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and interfering with an officer. The other two arrestees had outstanding warrants for violation of probation and harassment in the second degree. • In still another incident, on Dec. 28, an Amazon delivery driver reported to police that someone had stolen his truck, and officers responded to the area of Portsea Street by Cedar Street at around 5:32 p.m. The driver had left the truck running while he was delivering a package and a man got into the car and drove away. There were no weapons involved and the driver was unharmed. The stolen van is a white Dodge Ram and not masked with Amazon’s logo. It does display the code “R3” and has a New Jersey license plate reading “XHVS56.” Police ask that anyone with any information contact detectives at (203) 946‑6304 or through the anonymous tip-line at (866) 888-TIPS (8477).• The next day, on Dec. 29, at around 1:51 p.m., officers reported to the side parking lot of Hillhouse High School after receiving a ShotSpotter alert. They located shell casings in the parking lot and found the victim — a 53-year-old man from West Haven — in his car, in front of Hillhouse on Sherman Avenue. His car had been struck multiple times. The man was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. Investigators determined that the shots came from another car, which continued driving toward Hamden. Police ask that anyone with any relevant information contact detectives. • Finally, there have been two recent stabbings. The first was at Union Station on Tuesday, where a man used a boxcutter to stab another man multiple times in the station’s lobby during an altercation. There were witnesses and the stabbing was captured on surveillance cameras. Police responded to the scene at around 5:57 p.m., and the victim, a 53-year-old city resident, was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The alleged offender, meanwhile, was arrested for assault in the first degree, disorderly conduct, and carrying a dangerous weapon. Police ask that anyone with relevant information contact detectives. The second stabbing occurred the next day, on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Police responded at around 7:56 p.m. to the area of Kossuth Street and Davenport Avenue, after receiving report of a stabbing. They located the victim, who was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Police then located the suspected offender at his Spring Street home. He has been charged with assault in the first degree and disorderly conduct, and his bond has been set at $250,000.
