WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Residents in the District can expect an increased police presence after multiple people were killed due to a truck plowing into a crowd in New Orleans. Early New Year's Day, a pickup truck rammed into people on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens. In light of the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said it would heighten its security across the city. MPD Deputy Director of Communications Paris Lewbel shared a statement with DC News Now, writing, in part: Whenever an incident occurs in the country, MPD closely monitors the situation, evaluates intelligence, and assesses our security posture. As the nation’s capital, we maintain a heightened level of security at all times to ensure the safety of our residents, businesses, and visitors. As we approach upcoming major events in the District of Columbia, MPD will continue working with our local and federal partners to assess potential threats and make any necessary adjustments to safeguard the community.
