Sacred Pipe takes a sober spin on New Year's Eve celebrations
Dec 31, 2024
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — For people who are looking to stay sober this holiday season, New Year's Eve can sometimes feel like a struggle. That's why the Sacred Pipe Resource Center is throwing its second annual New Year's Eve Celebration for the urban Native community. But this is more than just a party — it's a way to heal.
Right now, the center is getting ready to put a unique spin on traditional New Year's celebrations. The center's executive director, Cheryl Ann Kary, says this will be a family-friendly event with its fair share of games to play and prizes to win.
But it's also a sober event, showing people who may struggle with addiction that there are ways to have fun without engaging in substances. This comes at a crucial time when rates of overdoses and drunk driving incidents are at an all-time high — but Kary says events like these are about tapping into tradition and historical ways Native Americans heal.

"I think our urban tribal community is really working on healing, and sobriety is part of that," says Kary. "We value sobriety and family engagement and community engagement. And so this event seems to hit all those boxes."
The celebration runs from 8 PM to midnight, and it will include a lip sync challenge, get-to-know-you bingo, crafts, and trivia. There will also be resources and peer support representatives there to aid anyone struggling with addiction.
