Weather Forecast: New Year's Eve rain, 2025 cold and snow
Dec 31, 2024
ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Our 2024 ends in similar fashion to much of the rest of the year...mild. Temperatures in the 40s will accompany scattered rain showers as we ring in the new year. It won't rain steadily up until midnight, but the risk for rain will be there.
The main story ahead is the change to colder air and snow starting tomorrow. Rain Wednesday early will transition to snow into the afternoon as temperatures start to fall toward freezing. This will make for slick travel at times into the evening as darkness will support more efficient accumulation. Overall, there won't be much in the Rochester region. Perhaps an inch or two of slushy accumulation before we turn into what is expected to be an extended stretch of lake effect potential.
Scattered lake effect snow showers will pepper favored parts of the region for the remainder of the week. For Rochester, most of this activity will be confined well to our east and south of Buffalo. A shift in the wind late Friday into Saturday could being Rochester more into play in terms of accumulating snowfall. We're going to need to get used to this as cold air and additional shots of lake effect snow look likely for the foreseeable future as the overall pattern screams winter.
Another significant round of lake effect snow is coming. This will be an extended stretch likely running from Wednesday-Sunday. For the sake of being as accurate as possible, I'm splitting snow maps from Wednesday-Friday & from Friday-Sunday (the latter will be posted later this… pic.twitter.com/H8efIlcyD1— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) December 31, 2024
