These meetings serve to provide the public with the rationale behind the fee adjustments, the extent of the increases, a potential customer assistance program and an opportunity for resident feedback.
The meetings to discuss the 10-year plan to raise sewer fees by 115% will be on Jan. 3 at ʻĀina Haina Community Park from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Jan. 6 at Kalanianaʻole Beach Park in the craft room at the same time.
Honolulu sewer fees could double in 10-years
The increase is necessary to address rising operational costs, as well as funding for critical projects, according to the City and County of Honolulu.
To offset the effect on low-income households, the Department of Environmental Services plans to launch the Customer Assistance for Residential Environmental Services program. This program may allow eligible households earning less than 80% of the area median income to receive monthly credits up to $25 on their fixed sewer charges.
