FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Quilting Bees has a history of being a gathering place for people to work on projects, learn new skills and make friends. The women in the Forsyth Piecers and Quilters Guild Wednesday Morning Bee look forward to the fun and friendship they share by meeting weekly at Old Town Neighborhood Center in Winston-Salem. They use their common interest in quilting to comfort people in need. “I've found I can only put so many quilts that I’ve made on my shelf, and that's really not very productive or helpful to anyone, so this is a great opportunity to make things that ... will be appreciated and used, and it gives us a chance to experiment just a bit,” Nancy Wright said. Members of the Guild make quilts to address varying needs and circumstances across Forsyth County, including assisting babies in the Dale and Karen Sisel NICU at Atrium Health Levine Children's Brenner Children's Hospital. Amy Elliott enjoys participating in that outreach. “I never see the baby who gets it or the family, but I have faith that these quilts do make an impact on the recipients,” she said. “You can look at the quilt and say ... 'Our community cares about this baby,' and I think that's a message that we want to send.” Dianne Luce enjoys the outreach that gifts nap blankets to local pre-K students. “We usually do it the first week of school each year ... The guild itself ... close to 400 a year. Our group, we do between 150 and 160 every year,” she said. “I get hugs from the teachers, and they always look forward to us coming.” The group also makes a point to ensure senior adults are not forgotten by working with local agencies to provide quilts and nap blankets. “The quilts are ... distributed depending on their needs, whether they're in a wheelchair, whether they are in bed or on a recliner,” Wright said. “The other group is the adult daycare, and we make a simpler quilt. We call them nap blankets.” The Forsyth Piecers and Quilters Guild recently created 140 Christmas stockings for the Asheville Quilt Guild to distribute as people recover from Hurricane Helene. “After a while, you need to reach beyond your circle, and if you enjoy this hobby and there are people who can use the projects you have created, it's good to let those projects go to those places,” Elliott said. Visit the guild’s website for details on the guild’s charitable projects and how you can get involved.
