New Year’s Eve showers ahead of big changes in 2025
Dec 30, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Monday! Big changes are on the horizon, but we will remain quiet and above average temperature-wise on this 2nd to last day of 2024. This quiet weather day is ahead of rain showers and breezy winds in the forecast on New Year’s Eve. Colder air arrives as we turn the calendar over to 2025 on Wednesday. New Year’s Day will feature a few snow showers with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s. If you think temperatures in the 30s sounds cold… just wait until next week as are expecting an extended period of very cold conditions to settle in.
New Year’s Eve
Rain showers move in after midnight tonight and will be with us to start your NYE day. Don’t expect all day rain but there will be off and on breezy rain showers throughout your final day of 2024. As you head out for NYE parties during the evening hours rain chances will start to drop off but so will the temperatures. After starting the day in the low 50s, we will be falling into the 40s for the afternoon and evening. By midnight, many areas will be already be in the upper 30s with a wind chill that will make it feel even colder than that. The winter jacket will be needed as you head out!
Rainfall amounts upwards of half an inch will be possible, with a bit higher amounts possible across northern Kentucky. Winds will be breezy once again during the midday and afternoon hours. It won’t be as windy as Sunday, but gusts upwards of 40 mph will be possible.
New Year’s Day
The first day of 2025 will be a cold day with isolated off and on snow showers. This won’t amount to much but may create a wintry scene at times. Temperatures will only reach the mid-to-upper 30s.
End of the Week and into the Weekend
We remain seasonably cold through the rest of the week. Afternoon highs will range from the mid-to-upper 30s Thursday into Friday. There is the chance for some light snow showers late Thursday into Friday as a weak clipper system sweeps through the area. This as the potential for a light snowfall but don’t expect much more than that. That will bring us some colder temperatures for the start of the weekend. Saturday will struggle to get out of the upper 20s and low 30s.
Eyes are on the end of the weekend for a potent and potentially wintry system moving through the region. There is still a lot of uncertainty with this system but it is something we have our eyes on. With the first punch of cold air in place, this could lead to a wintry chance. Current trends suggest this could be a messy system with all types of wintry precipitation possible. So stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to Sunday into Monday.
Next Week
Behind whatever that system becomes will be the beginning of a frigid pattern the way next week. Temperatures will likely stay below average for an extended period through at the least the end of the week. Usually these shots of cold air only stick around for a day or two, this very cold pattern likely sticks around for awhile. Now is a great time to winterize your home if you haven’t already.
