Stormy Sunday, drier to end year
Dec 28, 2024
We’re halfway through the final weekend of 2024, but the year refuses to go quietly. A Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather has been issued for the majority of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area on Sunday. A robust area of low pressure that created a tornado outbreak in the Deep South on Saturday will push northeastward over the next 24 hours, bringing a line of strong-to-severe storms to the Carolinas by Sunday morning. The main risks with this line will be gusty winds and heavy rain, but a few spin-up tornadoes can’t be ruled out. Some short-range models suggest that a second round of storms will fire up behind the line, but most of the rain will be gone by mid-afternoon Sunday as highs top out in the mid-60s.
Temperatures won’t take much of a hit for the final two days of the year on Monday and Tuesday; highs should end up near 60º. A few showers may roll into the Carolinas on our New Year’s Eve afternoon, but any moisture will likely be gone by the time we turn the page into 2025. The first few days of the new year appear sunny but chilly as highs dip into the 30s and 40s next weekend.
