Holiday traffic nightmare: Crash temporarily shuts down H1 Freeway

AIEA, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) -- Hundreds of cars are spending their last minutes of 2024 stuck in traffic on the H-1 Freeway.

Honolulu police were called to the H-1 Freeway in the Aiea area around 2:41 p.m. for a motor vehicle collision involving a propane truck.

The incident also caused a load to spill on the highway.
According to Honolulu EMS, two ambulance crews and a Field Operations Supervisor reported to the scene to treat four patients.
One 73-year-old female was treated for multiple traumatic injuries and taken to a trauma hospital in critical condition. A 33-year-old male was also taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Two other male patients sustained minor injuries but declined EMS transport.
As a result of the crash, both westbound and eastbound lanes of the H-1 were closed near the Aiea off-ramp.
HPD officers were at the scene to direct westbound traffic to the nearest off-ramps.
The eastbound lanes of the freeway were reopened around 4 p.m. All westbound lanes were reopened about an hour later.
