FORECAST: Strong cold front moves across area Sunday afternoon/evening
Dec 28, 2024
Throughout the early evening, wet weather will remain along and east of I-95 as a warm front associated with a strong storm system lifts through the area. With clouds and on-and-off precipitation expected, most of the overnight low temperatures will be in the 40s.
Tomorrow, a major cold front will move across the DMV during the afternoon and into the early evening hours, bringing heavy rain and possibly a few strong to severe thunderstorms. Additionally, the winds will increase out of the south, gusting to 25 mph at times. The Storm Prediction Center has the southwestern portions of the forecast area (primarily in Northern Virginia) in the crosshairs for a few severe storms. The risk of damaging wind gusts is the most significant concern with any severe storms. Heavy rain is also expected, with a couple of inches of total rainfall potential by Monday morning.
Monday, the aforementioned cold front will be well off our coast, with partly cloudy skies building in during the afternoon. Temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Sunday, with highs in the mid-40s to mid-50s.
On Tuesday, the last storm system will move into the region during an active weather pattern, bringing more wet weather. While most of the daylight hours stay rain-free, the soggy storm looks to impact the region during New Year's Eve. Aside from the showers, temperatures will once again remain above average, with another day in the 50s.
New Year's Day starts with much quieter weather, although mountain snow showers are forecasted. Otherwise, many folks will see some sunshine and the beginnings of much colder air moving in. The thermometer will steadily fall Wednesday night into Thursday and carry the cold into the upcoming weekend. Expect Thursday to see many people deal with high temperatures return to the mid-30s to mid-40s, with 20s across the mountains, before falling further into Friday.
