Maryland OAG investigating man's death after Gaithersburg police encounter on Christmas Eve

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (DC News Now) -- An investigation is underway into the death of a man who was taken into custody by police officers on Christmas Eve in Gaithersburg.
According to the Gaithersburg Police Department (GPD), on Tuesday around 10:15 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of North Summit Avenue for a man causing a disturbance.
Once on the scene, officers found the man lying on the ground in front of an apartment building. Police said he was covered in blood, conscious and was acting erratically.

However, he stood up and began walking away from the building.
According to the Maryland Attorney General's office, responding officers grabbed the man and held him down while waiting for EMS crews to arrive. During that time, the man stopped breathing and officers began performing life-saving measures until medics got to the scene.
He died in the hospital two days later.
GPD said the man's death is being investigated as a "police-involved in-custody death."
Per Maryland law, the investigation has been handed over to the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division.
