NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Just like the Holy Family in a strange land looking for posada, or someone to open their home, activists with Unión Migrante wanted to share the message that Jesus himself was an immigrant. "We're taught at Christmas about the message of Mary wandering pregnant and looking for who would open their doors to her to give birth and our savior being born in a stable, and this message is about giving love to our neighbors," Unión Migrante activist Rachel Taber said. Home for the Holidays: From homeless to housed Today's political climate sees many immigrants fearing for their future, with President-elect Donald Trump pushing for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants at the southern border. However, activists argue they have a right to be here; just like Jesus had a right to be in Bethlehem. "No human is illegal. As she mentioned, if Jesus was alive here, he'd be disappointed because we're creating these imaginary lines and I think any human belongs to be here," Unión Migrante activist Yareli Andino said. Unión Migrante claims they have already seen law enforcement working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to profile immigrants in New Orleans. "New Orleans has a horrific unsolved sexual crime rate. Why don't we have our law enforcement focus on that instead of trying to separate families who are only trying to work?" Taber said. Let there be light on the road, with NOLA’s Mobile Menorah The group is now calling on local officials to stand by the immigrant community in their fight to remain here without harassment. "A lot of our politicians love to make money off of immigrants but then hate on immigrants because it benefits their ambition for political power, and that is the antithesis of Christmas. Christmas is about love, unity, showing care for our neighbors and opening our hearts and homes to those in need," Taber said.
