DIAMOND BAR — Consistency. Juliet Oh’s 2024 season at Diamond Bar High School was the model of consistency with six podium finishes in eight events that were 18 or 36 holes and a nine-hole, dual-meet average of 34.7 Diamond Bar High School junior Juliet Oh has been chosen the IE Varsity Girls Golfer of the Year for the second straight year. Murphy Invitational hosted by Great Oak, and a trio of runners-up finishes at the South Bay Invitational hosted by Peninsula, the CIF Southern Section Central Region qualifier, and the CIF State Southern California regional finals. Oh also placed third in Palomares League finals, which boasted the area’s strongest tournament field as evidenced by its 12 automatic bids to Southern Section regional qualifying. For these reasons, Oh has been selected as our 2024 IE Varsity Girls Golfer of the Year, winning the honor for a second consecutive season. At the Central Region qualifier, hosted by Victorville’s Bear Valley Country Club, Oh shot a four-bogey and two-birdie round of 74 to earn runner-up honors. On that Monday, players battled winds around 20 miles an hour with higher gusts and greens that got progressively faster as the day went on, according to coaches at the site. Oh’s round on the nearly 5,700-yard par-72 Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Sr. designed layout was one of only four scores of 75 or better that day. “That’s a round that I’ll remember as much as any round I ever play just because of how tough the conditions were up there that day,” Oh said. “Golf’s easy when it’s 75 degrees and sunny but on a day like that you, really learn something about mental toughness, which is a big part of being a successful golfer.” With three holes left in her round at the CIF State regional finals, Oh was nearly involved in a tie-breaking scenario to earn a finals spot. However, she took advantage of having two par 5s in her final three holes, making an eagle and birdie to earn a second straight trip to the state finals. “I knew I’d have an opportunity at the end to make up some ground with those two par fives in my last three holes and that to get back to the finals I was going to have to take advantage of them,” Oh said. Diamond Bar is known as a high school program with a history of producing players who have succeeded at the collegiate and professional levels in both boys and girls golf. Kevin Na was a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, winning last in 2021 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. More recently, Brahma alum Sahith Theegala has recorded four runner-up finishes in PGA Tour competition. In terms of Diamond Bar girls golf alumni, Kailie Vonsaga is a two-time winner in college between stops at Arizona and Ohio State who earned EPSON Tour status for next year by advancing through the first stage of LPGA Tour qualifying. Also, Beth Wu was a three-time PAC-12 Honorable Mention selection at UCLA who reached the United States Women’s Amateur semifinals in 2015 along with back-to-back rounds of 32 in 2016 and 2017. “To be mentioned in the same breath as them is just inspiring and makes me want to work that much harder to live up to what they’ve accomplished.” Oh said. “Kailie spoke to our team during the season and I thought it was just so cool to have someone that has accomplished so much share their experiences about playing at the next level with us. Hopefully, that’s me a few years down the line.” Oh has some pretty big goals for her final high school season, including winning a Palomares League individual championship, leading Diamond Bar to a team title in league play, and winning a CIF State title. They are goals she’ll chase with that same fun-loving attitude she’s brought to Diamond Bar since her freshman year. IE VARSITY COACH OF THE YEAR Tim Boyd, Beaumont  Boyd guided Beaumont to its first league title in program history this season, completing a steady, upward improvement from last in Citrus Belt League play five years ago when he took the job. The Cougars improved their scoring average by nearly 36 strokes from 2023-2024 when they posted a nine-hole average of 273 en route to a CBL runner-up finish.
