ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) -- Many people who came to the D.C. area for the holiday season are heading home. After a few hiccups during the pre-holiday rush, Thursday travel has gone well, without lengthy delays or cancellations. However, one potential disturbance is the crowded parking lots at Reagan National Airport. At 3:30 p.m., only one parking lot was not 100% full. Traffic leading up to the airport was calm, though. The lines at the TSA security checkpoint were not lengthy and moved quickly. Outside the airport, families were saying their goodbyes after a Christmas of joy and new memories. "Holidays are always very special," said Caitlin Ryan, who was in D.C. from South Carolina visiting family. "But always bittersweet." Woman hit, killed by car in Burtonsville Giant Food store parking lot Inside the airport, not everyone was void of holiday spirit. "We had a beautiful day yesterday and it will continue," said 92-year-old Bob Nicks, who was going to Atlanta to bring a gift to his two-year-old great-grandson. Union Station, which saw pre-Christmas delays for trains to New York due to Amtrak issues, was quiet and running well on the 26. During the busy holiday season, those who traveled near and far said: the 'packing of the patience' was worth it. "The best part I think is just all of us being together," said Michaela Shaynin, who was visiting her sister with her mom. "We're so far away from each other. We're a bi-coastal family. And it's just nice to be able to, even if it's just for three days, be together and celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah."
