NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Firework sales for New Year's will soon start up. In Bismarck, Memory Fireworks starts selling fireworks at noon on December 28th and stays open on New Year's Day from noon to eight. For the capital city, you have to go outside the city limits to light and set off the fireworks, but if you go across the river to Mandan, you can light them in the city. "This season, I am expecting to sell a lot because I feel like the weather has just been really good and there is snow on the ground which kind of helps," said Shannon Knutson, co-owner of Memory Fireworks. "It actually makes the fireworks look really nice because with that white snow it just really lights up at night and it kind of reflects against that snow. It's really pretty." The bulk of their sales occur on Independence Day, but the winter sales help pay their rent and their employees. She hopes and expects to sell 10,000 items at the Bismarck location. "I think a lot of people will come back for a lot of the Memory Dakota series items that they had over the 4th of July that were their favorite," Knutson said. This firework series is geared to North Dakotans, and you can find them in the back of any Memory Fireworks store. Local businesses are preparing for return season They even have things for kids like party poppers and sparklers. They have many types of fireworks, including fountains, multi shots, family packs, reloads, smoke balls, and roman candles, just to name a few. Knutson says the Magic City location brings in about half the sales compared to Bismarck. Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate the holidays, but Knutson has some tips for staying safe while enjoying them. "Winter is a safe time to light fireworks because obviously, your ground isn't going to be dry, and that's the biggest fear for people is they don't want to light a grass fire," Knutson said. She says it's essential to always have a bucket of water to stop fires. Knutson also says that a sober adult should always be present to light the fireworks, and that kids should keep a safe distance from them, and not put their head over them. "Fireworks have a really good shelf life, so it's never going to be a problem when you are outside as long as you are not putting it in a huge puddle of water where the fuse is going to get wet," Knutson said. To light fireworks, you must go outside city limits. Knutson says kids should never light fireworks without a responsible adult, even the ones considered safer, such as party poppers and sparklers.
