SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — First Responders say the holiday season can be a very busy time for them because the risk of accidental fires grows, so they advise everyone to be cautious. "As you unwrap gifts, just be mindful of piling up that wrapping paper near any ignition sources that could catch those on fire. Also, be mindful if you did utilize a real Christmas tree this year, to use water on that tree. Trees that become dry and brittle can ignite much more quickly than others," said Suffolk Fire and Rescue Lieutenant Ryan Foster. Suffolk Fire crews say the post-holiday period is the best time to remind everyone about fire safety. "We always tell folks to utilize the yardstick rule and that means we want to keep things like Christmas trees three feet away from space heaters," Foster said. There are safe practices to follow when disposing your holiday tree too. "So, we don't recommend burning your trees again when they become dry and brittle. They can ignite much faster," Foster said, "And especially, we wouldn't want you to burn that tree too close to your home where that could spread and potentially catch the house on fire." If you're using a lot of candles this season, be sure you keep them at least 12 inches away from other items. Small steps that will go a long way as the Suffolk Fire and Rescue team prepares to close out 2024, with some big plans for 2025. "As the city grows as does the fire department. We're very excited next year to open fire station 11, which will be located on Hampton Roads Parkway to further enhance the ability to serve the public," Foster said. If you suspect a fire, always call 911.
