SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A beloved Hillcrest movie theater known for its slate of independent film screenings is set to close its doors next month after more than three decades in business. Landmark Hillcrest Cinema, the neighborhood's only movie theater, announced the closure in early January by way of a posted notice to patrons in the theater's lobby. According to the theater's website, no screenings are scheduled past Jan. 2 for the four movies currently playing at the theater — "Wicked," "Queer," "A Complete Unknown" and "Anora." Although it is also advertising an advanced screening of a yet-to-be-announced movie on Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. as part of Landmark's "first look" series. Hillcrest unites to add security guards to streets FOX 5/KUSI has reached out to Landmark Cinemas' parent company, Cohen Media Group, for more information on the closure and is awaiting response. Located inside the Village Hillcrest shopping center, the five-plex cinema has been a bedrock of the mixed-use complex since it was built in 1991. Over the years, it has served as one of the region's only places for cinephiles to see indie flicks and foreign language films on the silver screen. Back in 2017, the theater underwent extensive renovations, encompassing additions of then-new features — like its lobby wine and beer bar — and updates to its auditoriums. Since then however, as movie-watching habits changed, Landmark Cinemas has been left in dire financial straits. During the pandemic, the arthouse movie chain, which operates the Hillcrest theater, closed several of its locations, including the historic Ken Theater in Kensington. As the film industry publication Deadline reported, additional locations were at risk of closure as the chain's parent company was subject to a foreclosure auction earlier this year, but no bidders were received. Teens charged with hate crimes in connection to Hillcrest pellet gun attacks Following the announcement of the theater's closure, there has been an outpouring of grief from Hillcrest community members who frequented the cinema on social media. "Absolute [loss] for San Diego," one Instagram user wrote in the comments of a post on the closure by the community advocacy group, Vibrant Uptown, last week. "This was one of the last cinemas specializing and prioritizing arthouse films. Devastating." "Like many people I will miss the Landmark Cinema which has been a Hillcrest anchor for 30 years," another user wrote. "I’ve seen many Oscar-nominated movies there as well as the quirky independent films. Thanks for the memories."
