ONTARIO, Wis. (WFRV) – A 41-year-old woman from Wisconsin was arrested Monday morning following a welfare check that escalated into an armed standoff involving an aluminum bat.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched shortly before 11:00 a.m. to a residence on Hoff Valley Road after receiving a request for a welfare check. The requestor, who regularly communicates with Stacie L. Welter, reported concerns due to a lack of contact since the previous week, dogs running loose, and an unplowed steep driveway.

Upon arriving, deputies discovered a broken window on the front door. Welter was inside the home and reportedly armed with an aluminum bat. She advanced toward the door but complied when the deputy de-escalated the situation and convinced her to put down the weapon.
While attempting to establish further communication, Welter allegedly picked up a metal rod and advanced toward the deputy. The deputy deployed a stun gun to subdue her, and Welter was apprehended without further incident.

Authorities believe drug use may have been a factor. Welter was transported to the Vernon County Jail after refusing medical treatment.
Welter faces charges including first-degree recklessly endangering safety, resisting or obstructing an officer, felony bail jumping, and prisoner throwing or expelling bodily fluids. She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, December 26.
