Spin Doctors recount their meteoric rise en route to New Year's Eve spectacular
Dec 23, 2024
As 2024 draws to a close, the Spin Doctors are celebrating over 35 years in the music industry and over 2,000 live performances.
Band members Chris Barron and Aaron Comess reminisced about their appearance at the Woodstock '94 music festival. Comess recalled the helicopter ride from the sea of fans, calling it a defining moment for him. Barron remembered opening for the iconic Rolling Stones.
“Talking to Mick Jagger – or Michael Jagger, as I now call him – and hanging out with Keith Richards was surreal,” he said. “But honestly, one of the biggest highlights is playing music with these guys. Aaron, Eric [Schenkman], and Jack [Daly] are some of the best musicians of their era.”
The artists traced their roots back to the New School in Manhattan, where Comess and Barron connected through chance encounters and a shared passion for music.
“We created our own scene with bands like Blues Traveler and Joan Osborne,” Comess said. “It was an incredible time to be in New York City.”
Their gritty start at venues like the Nightingale Bar, described as a “bucket of blood kind of dump” by Barron, shaped their sound. “It was a classic rock-and-roll club where we played all night, cutting our teeth,” he said.
Their new album, Fistful of Cake, set for release in April 2025, reflects the gritty reality of their origin alongside modern necessity. The record was born out of COVID-19 lockdown creativity.
“We didn’t even plan to make a record. We were just recording demos, and suddenly we realized, ‘This is the album,’” Comess said.
The band recently wrapped up their fall tour and is planning a busy 2025, with a summer tour in the works. “We’re talking to some ‘90s bands you know and love,” Comess teased.
As for New Year's resolutions heading into an exciting 2025, Barron quipped that he would aim to “Keep having fun and making music.”
