BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Department of Correction said one inmate was taken to the hospital after a fire occurred in a cell at the Old Colony Correctional Center Monday. Around 7:35 a.m., correctional officers responded to the cell of an inmate “in need of attention.” Staff discovered a fire in the cell, with the inmate inside. DOC staff gave medical aid to the inmate and extinguished the fire. Officials said the fire was small and contained to the cell. The inmate was taken to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation. Five correction officers were also sent to area hospitals out of precaution due to smoke inhalation, according to the DOC. No other inmates were injured. Preliminary information shows that the inmate started the fire. During the scene, the unit around the cell was temporarily evacuated, and reopened when deemed safe. The Bridgewater Fire Department also responded to the scene. Categories: Massachusetts, News
