COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Jefferson City man was accused of exploiting an elderly couple.
Michael Gilley, 66, was charged in Cole County with financially exploiting an exploiting an elderly person and misdemeanor stealing. Court documents say he was arrested on Monday, but he has not appeared in online jail records on Tuesday. A $100,000 bond was set. A court date has not been scheduled.
The probable cause statement says Gilley was at the victims’ residence on Friday to sell a washing machine. He allegedly took $310 from one of the victims, but never brought over the washing machine and claimed the next day that he was trying to get a vehicle, court documents say.
Gilley then allegedly cut off contact with the victims, the statement says. Police tried to call him several times and went to his “workshop,” but he didn’t answer on Saturday or Sunday, court documents say. Police tried to contact him at his workshop again on Monday, but he refused to answer the door, the statement says.
Another person in the area was able to confirm that Gilley was in the building, court documents say. Gilley was eventually detained after exiting the building 45 minutes later, the statement says. He allegedly denied the allegations to police before saying he spent the money and didn’t attempt to deliver the washing machine, the statement says.
