CMPD details safety plan for CLT NYE in Uptown
Dec 23, 2024
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are preparing for one of the biggest parties of 2024 on New Year’s Eve. Five people were shot at an Uptown New Year’s Eve celebration in 2023.
Officials have moved the party from outside at Romare Bearden Park to inside at Truist Field. Officials say safety wasn’t the main motivation for moving the event, but this new set up could provide an extra layer of protection.
CMPD says this time around there are plans for protection in and around the park. They expect for crowds to gather all around uptown.
“CMPD will have officers stationed throughout key areas including Truist Field, Romare Bearden Park and surrounding streets to manage traffic and ensure public safety,” Lieutenant Crystal Fletcher from CMPD Public Affairs said.
Tickets are $10 dollars per person and gates open at 10pm. Attendees will walk through metal detectors and only small bags are allowed. The celebration will end after the fireworks at midnight.
“Our deployed assets will include patrol officers, bicycle units, dual sport motorcycles and our specialized Juvenile Accountability and Diversion Empowerment Team, otherwise known as Jade. All of these units will be working together to create a safe environment,” Lieutenant Fletcher said.
The man accused of shooting five people in Uptown plead guilty to several charges including Assault with a Deadly weapon. The judge sentenced him to spend up to three years in jail. CMPD credits its officers for locating the suspect shortly after the shooting.
“We are going into New Year’s Eve confident that it will be a safe and secure environment for everybody,” Lieutenant Fletcher said.
Tickets for CLTNYE are available online and at the door.
