BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- One of the nine YMCA locations in the Baton Rouge area is closing on Feb. 1, 2025. The YMCA Board of Directors decided to close the C. B. Pennington Jr. YMCA at 15550 Old Hammond Highway due to financial factors. The YMCA cited "increases in insurance, staff costs, and since COVID, a loss of revenue." The YMCA made attempts to avert the closing. Among other things, they tried to reduce expenses and raise new money. Over $4 million was invested in the facility and the nonprofit shifted its prices to bring in new members. “We fully understand the impact of these actions and we want to ensure our community and our members that they are being taken with the greatest care and concern for those affected,” Interim President/CEO of YMCA of the Capital Area Josh Landry said. “Our volunteers and staff will continue to explore the opportunities for new partnerships and new opportunities to continue to support the community.” Restaurants open New Year’s Day in Baton Rouge A decision has not been made on what will happen to the C.
