SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - As people travel to their holiday destinations, the roads are expected to get busy. People in western Massachusetts took this last weekend before Christmas to do some last minute shopping AAA is anticipating of the 119 million travelers this holiday, about 90% of people will be driving to their holiday destination this year, and Monday is going to be one of the worst days on the roads. If you are one of the millions of people driving to your destination on Monday, AAA says the best time to leave to hopefully avoid some of the traffic is before 11 a.m. They say the worst time on the roads will be between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. during the evening rush. If you are going to the airport on Monday, also expect more traffic, so you may want to think about leaving even earlier than anticipated to account for possibly long security lines. AAA expects air travel will set a new record this year with just about 8 million passengers. Cruises, buses, and trains are also expected to be busier than in years past. So, if you are leaving on Monday on the roads, leave before 11 am, and if you are flying or getting on another mode of transportation including a bus train, or cruise, expect it to be busier than usual and leave extra time for yourself so you can safely make it to your destination. With these frigid temperatures forecast on Monday as well, it's important to be prepared in case anything goes wrong. Check your tires and car batteries. AAA says it's important to make sure your car is all set so you're not stranded in this cold weather. AAA anticipates assisting more than 868,000 members with dead batteries and flat tires being the most common causes. In your car, you should have a blanket, water, a flashlight, and snacks, just in case anything happens as exposure to temperatures this cold can be life-threatening.
