CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Black and Free Kwanzaa Expo took place this weekend, offering people a chance to celebrate African-American culture with food, music and more.
The event took place on Sunday, Dec. 22 at the Beulah Recreation Center at 6901 Hopkins Road in Chesterfield. It featured live music and vegan soul food while also showcasing several Black-owned businesses from the community.
Hosted by the nonprofit For the Fem in You, the celebration was free to attend, but also offered tickets on a pay-what-you-can basis where all proceeds went towards the organization.
8News spoke with Andrea Daughtry -- the founder of For the Fem In You -- about why an event like this is important.
"It's important for a community to get involved," Daughtry said. "It's important for a community to connect with their culture and it's important for our generations that are coming to understand the meaning of wanting."
