Destination Louisiane: Walk through Baton Rouge's new holiday experience Louisiana Lights
Dec 20, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Do you want to enjoy Christmas like never before as the holiday spirit shines with thousands of twinkling lights, fun and interactive experiences?
Well, Louisiana Lights at the Burden Museum and Gardens offers that and more.
"This is Louisiana Lights, and it's Baton Rouge's newest holiday tradition, and we're welcoming people from all over," said Director of LSU Rural Life Museum Bill Stark.
You can find the family-friendly experience right in the heart of Baton Rouge, filled with over 400,000 lights.
"This garden is magical, that the enhancement of the lights makes it even more magical," said Director of LSU AG Center of Botanic Gardens Jeff Kuehny.
Both Stark and Kuehny stated that it has been under development for years and is part of a master plan that remains incomplete.
"We've been working, we've done workshops with people, volunteers that came out, stakeholders, so we could really design this and shape it," said Stark.
You can enjoy live performances, roast s'mores, get hot chocolate or wine and take lots of pictures.
"The walk-through is a mile and a half. You're not going to feel that mile and a half because you're going to be enjoying the lights. We do have a little shortcut for those who don't feel like they can make it that far. They can take a shortcut through and not experience the entire show, but still experience the main part of it," Kuehny said.
Louisiana Lights should get you into the holiday spirit. It also aims to spotlight the garden, its statues and nature's beauty.
"This five acres in the middle of 400 acres, so part of the experience is a lakeside stroll where you're by a 20-acre lake with the lights reflecting into the lake," said Kuehny.
Baton Rouge restaurants open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
More than 2,000 people have attended since opening. Purchasing tickets gives an experience and helps others, according to Stark.
"The proceeds from this they come back are going back to helping to restore and care for the Windrush gardens themselves, the historic structures that are inside and then the property as a whole," said Stark.
Louisiana Lights is open from Thursday to Sunday until Dec. 29. The light show starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and kids four and older.
You must reserve and buy tickets online. They are for specific time frames, but people can stay as long as they want.
"We've had a number of sell-out days and all the tickets are timed ticket entries. So you spend as long as you want, but you come in at a certain time to help even out that flow," said Stark.
