BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — Six marathons in six days. That's what Renae Cicchinelli will be running in July. The Mt. Hope High School track coach is participating in "America’s Longest Relay," the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Run the U.S. Ultra Relay event. It starts in California in April and finishes in New York City in August. She has been chosen to run segment 19, which goes from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Brookville, Penn. The route is 153 miles in six days from July 29 to Aug. 3. "I have been given the ability to run for many years and as I am getting older, I realize it is not to be taken for granted. I run for those who can't," Cicchinelli said. (Courtesy: Renae Cicchinelli) "MS has affected those around me, family members, friends, coworkers, so many people I have talked to and have told me their stories," she continued. "I want to do something to help!" Cicchinelli has loved to run for as long as she can remember. She ran track in middle school and cross country and track in high school, then continued to run cross country at Florida Southern College. "I’ve done a couple of ultra relays in the past, but nothing that spans more than one day," she said. "The most I’ve run is 33 miles in a day." An ultra relay is anything longer than marathon distance (26.2 miles). Her goal is to raise $10,000 by the time the race starts in April, but she also has an initial target of raising $2,000 by Dec. 31. "If I don’t get my $10,000 goal by then, I will be able to continue fundraising through my leg of the event," Cicchinelli explained. "It would be nice to be able to put my focus on training from April on though." The money raised will go toward research and aid for those with mobility issues. "I want to make a difference in the lives of others and not just my own," Cicchinelli said. Click here to donate Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
