San Diego International Airport sees over 200 delays: how to check flight status
Dec 20, 2024
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Many air travelers seeking to fly in and out of San Diego International Airport (SAN) Friday morning were faced with flight delays. The setbacks came amid a Dense Fog Advisory, which began Thursday.
This type of weather advisory is issued by the National Weather Service when widespread dense fog develops. During these instances, visibility can drop to one-quarter miles or less, which makes for tricky conditions for travel -- both air and ground. The advisory is expected to remain in place until 10 a.m. Friday.

Despite the weather, SAN appeared to be very busy during the morning hours as travelers set out for their holiday destinations, just five days out from Christmas Day. The fog was grey and dense as flyers were dropped of by the dozens, with airport traffic also appearing heavy.
Some of those travelers may be faced with the harsh realities that tend to come with holiday travel -- delays and cancelations. According to FlightAware, a real-time flight tracking platform, there were over 200 delays across, into or out of the U.S. Friday at SAN as of 10 a.m. On top of that, FlightAware reported another 21 cancellations.
For those headed to the airport Friday and in the coming days as the holiday rush ramps up, it's suggested that you check your flight status ahead of your arrival to SAN to avoid any surprises.
Here are a few ways to easily check your flight’s status:
-- Visit the official airport website: It provides real-time flight information. Simply go to www.san.org and navigate to the “Flight Information” section. You can search by airline, flight number or destination to get the latest updates, including departure and arrival times, gate information and any delays.
-- Use the flight tracking apps: Several third-party apps and websites track flights in real-time, such as FlightAware, FlightRadar24 or FlightStats. By entering your flight number, you can receive updates on your flight’s status, including potential delays and cancellations.
-- Contact your airline: Most airlines offer customer service lines, or you can check their website or app for up-to-date flight statuses. Airlines typically send out notifications via email or SMS if there are any changes to your flight’s schedule.
-- Check the airport’s digital display boards: Once you’re at the airport, check the large digital display boards throughout the terminals. They display current flight statuses, including gate assignments, delays and boarding information.
-- Call the airport information line: If you don’t have access to the internet or prefer to speak with someone, you can call the airport's main information line at (619) 400-2404. Staff can provide you with the latest flight updates.
By checking your flight status in advance, you can ensure a smoother experience at SAN. Safe travels, San Diego.
