Police responded to the gas station after getting calls just before 6 p.m. about a man, later identified as 30-year-old Anthony Hernandez, carrying a gun and pointing it at people. APD said they were also told Hernandez had his 4-year-old daughter with him and had pointed the gun at the child multiple times.
APD said that around 6:20 p.m. officers told Hernandez to drop his gun. They said he turned to walk away but then turned back toward officers and fired. Officers returned fire, and Hernandez was killed.
Three bystanders were shot in in the exchange of gunfire. A woman was hit in the arm, one man was hit in the hand, and a 68-year-old man was also struck in an unknown location. All three individuals were taken to the hospital.
APD said they recovered the suspect’s gun and that it had an empty magazine. The 4-year-old was not injured in the shooting.
