A California father killed his wife and their two children, a 9-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, inside their apartment earlier this week in what police believe to be a murder-suicide.
Officers with the Milpitas Police Department found all found four bodies on Tuesday in the Turing at The Fields apartment complex in Milpitas. They’d been conducting a welfare check requested by concerned relatives, who told them they had not heard from the family for days.
In an update Thursday, Lt. Tyler Jamison identified the family as 36-year-old Vinh Nguyen, his wife, 36-year-old Becky Pham, their 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter, whose name were not released at the request of their loved ones. Each of them suffered a single gunshot wound, but their causes of death are still pending, police said.
Investigators at this time believe Nguyen killed his wife and children at some point over the weekend, and then turned the firearm on himself. Jamison noted that a handgun, which was legally registered to Nguyen, was found at the scene.
“This tragedy is a difficult reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and gun violence,” Jamison said Thursday. “The loss of their lives was preventable and for anyone experiencing distress, whether that’s domestic violence, gun violence or mental health concerns, help is available.”
While a motive remains under investigation, court documents show Ngyuen and Pham were in the midst of the divorce prior to the deadly violence. Family said the split had been taking a toll on Ngyuen, who had also been suffering from depression and insomnia, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Jamison noted that were no prior police calls from the home.
“This was our first contact as a police department with them,” he said.
