Friday evening flakes give way to the coldest air of the year
Dec 19, 2024
Clouds begin to return tonight in advance of a developing coastal storm.
While the bulk of this storm will remain out to sea, we will be on the outer fringes as temperatures drop later Friday, giving us the potential for a little snow.
Friday morning will be cloudy and chilly with temperatures in the 30s all day. Rain will start in the afternoon, with a changeover increasingly likely towards the evening.
Even with a coating to an inch of slow, this will lead the possibility of a hazardous Friday evening commute.
As the storm intensifies offshore, precipitation will turn a bit heavier along eastern Massachusetts even as it tapers off in Rhode Island.
As a result, we could wind up with an inch or two in parts of Plymouth, the Cape and the Islands.
Even as we draw less than 24 hours before the event, it is still a tricky forecast. Any deviation of the track of the storm will mean a change in precipitation type and amounts.
Things are quiet after midnight as we head toward the Winter Solstice at 4:20 AM Saturday. It will be a mostly cloudy day with some flurries around.
Temperatures will be colder, barely reaching freezing, while wind chills will drop into the single-digits after sundown.
Lows drop to around 10 and Sunday’s highs will barely reach the 20s despite a day of full sunshine. Sunday night is when we will see the coldest temperatures, with lows near zero in spots!
Monday will also be sunny and cold with highs in the upper-20s. Clouds build in and temperatures moderate for Christmas Eve on Tuesday.
We could see some rain or snow showers on Christmas Eve as well, making for a festive atmosphere if they remain the latter.
Christmas Day Wednesday looks to have a blend of sun and clouds.
