BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Kern County law enforcement officers took a break from patrolling the streets and got a chance to play Santa to spread cheer to families in need. The Bakersfield Police Department and Kern County Sheriff's Office, along with volunteers, gathered at High Desert Distribution Wednesday morning to assemble and deliver 500 food baskets to members in the community. The effort is part of the "Family to Family Christmas Food Basket" program that started back in 1984, with just 25 baskets. Kern County Fire Department retires H408 after 24 years of service Every year, Kern County law enforcement and community members nominate families to receive a basket that includes a turkey and all the fixins for a nice holiday meal. Some recipients of the baskets were victims of crime while others could just use a helping hand to get by during the holidays. BPD Chief Greg Terry says the program gives officers a chance to deliver hope to the people they serve and protect.
